What awaits you in this course?

The course consists of recordings of the lecture series on integrated urban development strategies organized by TU Kaiserlautern, TU Berlin, BTU Cottbus, and TH Lübeck. Over ten weeks, various speakers present and discuss integrated urban development strategies in line with EU's New Leipzig Charter. The program covers topics such as urban planning, urban renewal, resilience, sustainable and smart city structures, and participation, among others. Moreover, the series is enriched by experts from academia and practice who are familiar with the Ukrainian context and can contribute their international experience to start a constructive dialogue on the major challenges in Ukrainian cities and regions.

Lecture Series I: Integrated Urban Development Strategies:

In this lecture series, that was developed as part of the DAAD project "Digital Learning Platform – ReConstructionModules and Integrated Urban Development“, various experts from academia and practice share their knowledge of the Ukrainian context and other international projects. The focal point is integrated urban development in accordance with the EU’s New Leipzig Charter, with a focus on urban planning, urban renewal, urban design, resilience and sustainability.

Today, urban development deals with the task of further developing existing urban areas while taking various social requirements and challenges into account. This requires partnerships and cooperation between different disciplines as well as social groups and actors. Ukraine has already started to build decentralised and democratic planning cultures in municipalities with the 2017 White Paper on Integrated Urban Development. Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine is however directed against the goals of the EU-Leipzig Charter: the European city as a place of democracy, pluralism, rationalism, subsidiarity and orientation towards the common welfare. In view of the immense challenges Ukraine has to face, the lecture series intends to start a constructive dialogue and open up future perspectives for Ukrainian cities and regions.

The lecture series is part of the project „Reconstruction Modules Ukraine“ and funded by the DAAD program „Ukraine Digital“. It is organized and conducted by Prof. Dr. Detlef Kurth, Anna Kuzyshyn [RPTU Kaiserslautern], Prof. Christoph Wessling, Prof. Dr. Silke Weidner, Dr. Sepideh Zarrin Ghalam [BTU Cottbus], Prof. Frank Schwartze and Vivienne Mayer [TH Lübeck]. Experts from academia and practice contribute with their expertise from international projects as well as from the Ukrainian and German context and wish to continue the dialogue about the major challenges and open up future perspectives for resilient Ukrainian cities (see Lecture Series 1).
